Softball Sweeps Series with St. Bonaventure

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University softball team (21-15) recorded its fifth 20-win season in program history when it swept a doubleheader with Little Three rival St. Bonaventure University (16-18) Wednesday at Niagara Field. The Purple Eagles won 4-0 and 10-2 in five innings to extend its modest three-game winning streak and improve to 7-3 on Monteagle Ridge.

Niagara returns to action when it hosts Fairfield University in a noon doubleheader on Saturday.

Niagara 4, St. Bonaventure 0  

Niagara recorded its third shutout of the season and sophomore Tiffany McCrory (Albuquerque, N.M.) registered her 10th win of the season, throwing a five-hitter with six strikeouts. The right-hander is now second on the Purple Eagle single-season wins list.

The Purple Eagles scored all four runs in the third inning. Sophomore Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit a lead-off home run to start the inning. The homer was the first baseman’s team-leading eighth of the season.

Three more runs came when senior Nicole Sum (Burnaby, B.C.) connected on a double to left centerfield and then scored on an RBI single by sophomore Jamie Constantz (Endicott, N.Y.). Junior Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) then hit a two-run double to right field to score Constantz and junior Kelly Flaherty (Hastings, N.Y.).

Niagara 10, St. Bonaventure 2 (5 innings)

Niagara extended its modest winning streak to three games, scoring a season-high 10 runs in five innings.

St. Bonaventure took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Patricia McKeon hit a two-run shot to centerfield.

Niagara tied the game in the bottom of the second when senior Shannon Mongalise (Bethel Park, Pa.) hit a two-run home run to left field. The dinger was her third of the season.

The Purple Eagles got their second two-run home run of the game in the bottom of the third when freshman Jennifer Yee (North Delta, B.C.) hit her team-leading eighth to center field.

Niagara produced a five-run fourth inning, all on two outs. Baker hit an RBI single to score Mongalise and then St. Bonaventure walked in three runs before Sum hit a two-run single.

Flaherty scored the final run of the game when she walked, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Constantz and then scored on a St. Bonaventure error.

Freshman Katie Gleiser (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) won her fifth game of the season on the mound with a two-hitter and five strikeouts.
