Softball Drops Two at Youngstown State

Sophomore Tory Healy hit her seventh home run of the season Wednesday.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Niagara University softball team (18-14) had its modest two-game winning streak snapped Wednesday when it lost to Youngstown State (13-16), 2-1, and 8-0, at McCune Park.

The Purple Eagles return to action Saturday when they meet Siena College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader in Loudonville, N.Y.

Youngstown State 2, Niagara 1

Sophomore Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit her team-leading seventh home run of the season, but that was all the offense Niagara could muster in the opener.

Healy led the fifth inning off with the homer, and the Purple Eagles’ only other significant scoring opportunity came in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Jamie Constantz (Endicott, N.Y.) singled up the middle, went to second on a single by freshman Heather Lohrman (Newport Beach, Calif.), then reached third on a ground out, but a second ground out left two runners on for Niagara.

Sophomore Tiffany McCrory (Albuquerque, N.M.) gave up six hits and struck out five in six innings of work.

Youngstown State 8, Niagara 0

Youngstown State’s Tricia Hilbish threw a one-hit shutout to help the Penguins sweep the series with Niagara.

Junior Kelly Flaherty (Hastings, N.Y.) got the Purple Eagles’ lone hit with a lead-off single to left field in the sixth inning.

Freshman Katie Gleiser (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) gave up 11 hits and struck out seven in five and two-thirds innings of work.
