NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University softball team (18-12) swept its second series of the season Tuesday when it defeated Colgate University (13-18), 2-1 and 3-2, at Niagara Field.
Freshman Heather Lohrman (Newport Beach, Calif.) was 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored in the series. The Purple Eagle pitching corps of sophomores Tiffany McCrory (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Brooke Viola (Los Alamitos, Calif.) combined for a 1.00 earned-run average, giving up eight hits and striking out 12 on the day.
Niagara returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Youngstown, Ohio, for a 4 p.m. doubleheader vs. the Penguins.
Niagara 2, Colgate 1
Niagara snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory in game one of the doubleheader.
Sophomore Jamie Constantz (Endicott, N.Y.) made her first hit of the season the game winner when she registered a two-run single to left field to score senior Shannon Mongalise (Bethel Park, Pa.) and junior Ashley Bognar (Tonawanda, N.Y./Sacred Heart) in the bottom of the second.
Colgate got on the scoreboard in the third inning when Jessi Bentovoja singled to right field and then scored on a Niagara error.
McCrory threw a five-hitter with five strikeouts to pick up her ninth win of the season and move her into sole possession of fifth place on the career (16) and single-season wins list at Niagara.
Niagara 3, Colgate 2
A double and a Colgate error helped Niagara sweep the series with Colgate.
With the game tied at 2-2, Heather Lohrman doubled to left centerfield and then scored when classmate Jennifer Yee (North Delta, B.C.) singled and the Raiders committed an error on the throw allowing Lohrman to score.
Jamie Constantz scored Niagara’s first two runs when she scored on a walk in the third inning and then again in the fifth on a ground out.
Colgate scored its first run in the sixth when Tiana Tyeskey hit an RBI single to score Calla Yee.
The Raiders tied the game in the top of the seventh when Ashley Rowe was walked and then scored on an outfield error.
Viola tossed a three-hitter with seven strikeouts to win her fifth game of the season.
Sophomore Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and freshman Heidi Conlan (Lewiston, N.Y./Niagara Catholic) collected a pinch-hit double in the sixth inning.
