Softball Wins Second-Straight Game


Sophomore Brooke Viola pitched a four-hit shut out Sunday.

DOVER, Del. – For the second-straight day, the Niagara University softball team (8-6) defeated St. Joesph’s, 6-0, in its final game at the Bash at the Beach Tournament.

Sophomore Brooke Viola (Los Alamitos, Calif.) threw a four-hit shut out with five strikeouts to record her first win of the season.

Niagara took a 3-0 lead in the second inning when sophomore Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) singled and then scored on junior Nicole Sum’s (Burnaby, B.C.) double. Senior Shannon Mongalise (Bethel Park, Pa.) then hit a two-run home run to plate Sum.

The Purple Eagles scored their final three runs in the third when junior Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca) and freshman Jennifer Yee (North Delta, B.C.) each singled. Healy and Sum then had back-to-back doubles.

Niagara returns to action next weekend when it plays in the UMBC Tournament in Baltimore, Md.
