VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Niagara University softball team (6-3) completed play in the Mason Dixon Classic Sunday, splitting its last two games to finish 4-2. The Purple Eagles lost to Cornell University, 6-0, and then beat George Mason, 7-3.
Niagara returns to action next weekend when it plays in the Delaware State Tournament in Dover, Del.

Five errors and just three hits ended Niagara’s two-game winning streak.
The Big Red took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and then scored four more runs in the fifth.
Sophomore Brooke Viola (Los Alamitos, Calif.) gave up seven hits and six runs in seven innings of work on the mound.
Niagara 7, George Mason 3
Sophomore Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) and freshman Christine Howden (Peterborough, Ont.) both went 3 for 4 to help Niagara beat George Mason for a second time in three days.
Niagara scored four runs in the seventh inning to break open a 3-3 tie. Senior Kelly Flaherty (Hastings, N.Y.) singled, moved to second on junior Lisa Baker’s (West Seneca, N.Y.) bunt, took third on freshman Felicia Coffey (Mesa, Ariz.) single and scored on junior Nicole Sum’s (Burnaby, B.C.) single. Healy then hit a three-run double to right centerfield. Freshman Heather Lohrman (Newport Beach, Calif.) then singled Healy home.
The Purple Eagles took a 2-0 lead when Coffey singled and then scored on a Healy double. Howden then singled Healy home. Niagara made it 3-0 when Howden doubled and then scored on a Patriot error.
George Mason scored in the fourth and plated two in the fifth to tie the game.
Coffey and Lohrman were both 2 for 4 and Flaherty 2 for 3.
Sophomore Tiffany McCrory (Albuquerque, N.M.) won her fourth game of the season, giving up five hits and one run while striking out two in four innings. Freshman Katie Gleiser (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) threw three innings, giving up five hits and two runs.
