Sophomore Tory Healy collected seven RBI Saturday in two Niagara wins.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Niagara University softball team (5-2) improved to 3-1 in the Mason Dixon Classic Saturday after beating the University of Delaware, 5-4 in eight innings and then defeating Brown University, 3-2.

The Purple Eagles return to action Sunday when they play Cornell University at 9 a.m. and George Mason at 1 p.m.

Niagara 5, Delaware 4 (8)

Junior Nicole Sum’s (Burnaby, B.C.) squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth inning scored freshman Jennifer Yee (North Delta, B.C.) from third to help Niagara defeat Delaware in its first extra inning game of the season.

Starting at second for to the international tie breaker rule, Yee moved to third when Healy put down a sacrifice bunt.

The Purple Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the game when junior Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y.) and freshman Felicia Coffey (Mesa, Ariz.) opened the third inning with back-to-back singles. Sophomore Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) then hit a two-run double to deep centerfield.

With two outs, Niagara made it 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Coffey and Yee singled, Yee stole her second base of the season and Healy then came up with her second two-run double to deep centerfield.

Starting pitcher Katie Gleiser (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) threw five-plus innings, giving up five hits and striking out five, before she was relieved by sophomore Tiffany McCrory (Albuquerque, N.M.) with two runners on.

Delaware tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth and held Niagara scoreless in the seventh to force the international tie breaker situation.

Healy was 2 for 2, Coffey 3 for 4, Baker 2 for 4 and Sum 2-4. McCrory picked up the win throwing two-plus innings, giving up six hits, three walks and striking out one.

Niagara 3, Brown 2

The one-two punch of Yee and Healy in the sixth inning gave Niagara its second consecutive win of the day.

Yee opened the inning with her first collegiate triple and Healy then scored her with a single to right field.

The Purple Eagles led 2-0 in the top of the first when Yee singled and Healy hit her third home run of the season to left field.

Brown tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but McCrory got her second win of the day limiting Bears to four hits for the game.

Healy, Yee and freshman Christine Howden (Peterborough, Ont.) were all 2 for 3 in the game.
