NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University swimming and diving teams (0-2) open the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference portion of their 2006 schedule Saturday when they host Canisius College (M, 0-2, W, 0-3), Manhattan College women’s team (6-0) and Saint Peter’s College (M, 1-1, 1-0, W, 0-1,0-1) in a tri-meet at the Oxy Aquatic Center located in the Kiernan Center on the Monteagle Ridge campus. Diving begins at 9:30 a.m. and the swimming portion at 1 p.m.
Both the Purple Eagle squads will be looking for their first wins of the season. The men’s team lost 184-106 to the University at Buffalo this past weekend while the team’s team lost 110-87 at Duquesne Oct. 27.
Junior Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) won all three of his events vs. the Bulls. He captured the 200 free (1:45.89), 100 fly (53:20) and the 200 IM (2:01.51). Senior Dave Germain (Oswego, N.Y.) placed second on both the one meter (215.40) and the three meter (188.10) diving boards. Sophomore Zak Brown (Bakersfield, Calif.) also had two second-place finishes in the 1000 free (10:38.19) and the 100 free (49.89).
Canisius is also winless on the men’s side, losing at Binghamton, 183-84 on Oct. 28. Saint Peter’s lost its most recent meet, falling at Fordham, 134-101, but defeated Fairfield, 131-106, in league action.
On the women’s side, both the Golden Griffins and the Peahens will be looking for their first wins of the season. Canisius lost at Binghamton, 219-70, and Saint Peter’s was defeated 140-57 by Fordham.
