Swimming & Diving Teams Close Regular Season Wednesday

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams conclude their regular season Wednesday when they host Big Four rival St. Bonaventure at 6 p.m. in the Oxy Aquatic Center located in the Kiernan Recreation Center on Monteagle Ridge.

The Purple Eagle women’s team (6-6) sports a modest two-meet winning streak after defeating cross-town rival Canisius College, 141-75, on Jan. 27.

Freshman Allison Carr (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Wheatfield) set the school and the Koessler Center pool records in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:07.20. Senior Kelly Kennedy (York, N.Y.) also set a pool record in the 50 free, swimming 25.16.

Senior Emily Zimdahl (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) kept her winning streak alive, placing first in the three-meter diving event with a score of 208.12.

On the men’s side, Niagara looks to create a streak of its own with a win Wednesday. The Purple Eagles defeated Canisius in their last outing, 119-99.

Sophomore Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) won the 200 free (1:47.47) and the 100 fly (52.71) at Canisius while freshman and Niagara Athlete of the Week Ray DeWire (Tamaqua, Pa.) was a double winner, winning the 1000 free (10:50.04) and the 500 free (5:19.08). Sophomore James Polito (Reading, Pa.) captured the 50 free (22.10) and junior Dave Germain (Oswego, N.Y.) won the one- and three-meter diving events with scores of 196.50 and 208.12, respectively.

The St. Bonaventure men enter the meet 6-5 overall and as winners in three of its last four meets. In their last outing, the Bonnies lost at Michigan State, 131.5-110.5. On the women’s side, St. Bonaventure also lost to the Spartans, 142-111, to drop to 5-4 on the season.

Last year in Olean, the Niagara men’s team lost, 138-66, and the women, 161-61.
