Swimming & Diving Sweep Canisius


Senior Kelly Kennedy broke the pool record in the 50 free Friday night.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Canisius College Friday night in the Purple Eagles’ final Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference meet of the season. The women’s team won its second in a row, 141-75, and the men’s team won, 119-99.

Freshman Allison Carr (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Wheatfield) set the school and the Koessler Center pool records in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:07.20. Senior Kelly Kennedy (York, N.Y.) also set a pool record in the 50 free, swimming 25.16.

Senior Emily Zimdahl (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) kept her winning streak alive, placing first in the three-meter diving event with a score of 208.12.

Niagara won 10 of the 26 women’s events. Sophomore Kaitlin DiDonato (Massapequa, N.Y.) won the 1,000 free (11:32.86), sophomore Mariah Glass (Oswego, N.Y.) the 200 free (2:05.83) and the 100 back (1:04.74), senior Jody Pangburn (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East) the 100 fly (1:05.51), Kennedy the 100 free (57.42) and freshman Hope Wiles (Baltimore, Md.) the 500 free (5:28.56). The 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay teams also took firsts.

On the men’s side, sophomore Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) won the 200 free (1:47.47) and the 100 fly (52.71). Freshman Ray DeWire (Tamaqua, Pa.) was a double winner, winning the 1000 free (10:50.04) and the 500 free (5:19.08). Sophomore James Polito (Reading, Pa.) captured the 50 free (22.10) and junior Dave Germain (Oswego, N.Y.) won the one- and three-meter diving events with scores of 196.50 and 208.12, respectively.

Both Niagara teams host Big Four rival St. Bonaventure in its final regular-season meet of the year on Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. in the Oxy Aquatic Center.
