JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Three players scored in double digits but turnovers cost Niagara University as it lost 79-59 to Saint Peter’s College Sunday evening in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball game in the Yanitelli Center.
Sophomore Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) scored a team-high 18 points while junior Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) had 12 points and senior James Mathis (Newark, N.J.) 11 points. Junior Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Niagara suffered from a season-high 21 turnovers, including 12 in the second half. The total was the most since the Purple Eagles had 24 in a win over Siena College on Feb. 7, 2005.
After trailing 32-28 at halftime, Niagara cut the Peacocks’ lead to five points on a layup by Fisher with 17:38 left in the game. Saint Peter’s then went on a 13-2 run to take a 16-point lead, 50-34.
The Peacocks built a 60-43 lead before a three-point play by Fisher cut it to 62-48, the closest Niagara would get the rest of the game.
In the first half, Saint Peter’s opened with a 19-9 run. Niagara, which had seven turnovers during the Peacock’s run, battled back and cut the lead to three points with a 9-2 run capped on a jumper in the paint by Fisher with 7:05 left.
The Peacocks stretched their lead to 30-22 before the Purple Eagles scored six points to close the half.
Niagara outrebounded Saint Peter’s, 35-26, but only shot 11.1 percent (2 of 18) from three-point range and allowed the Peacocks to shot 50.8 percent (32-63) from the field and 41.7 percent (5-12) from beyond the three-point arc.
Saint Peter’s senior Keydren Clark had a game-high 27 points.
