Senior Linzi Scarfone

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Sophie Barstad had the game-winning hit to help the University of Buffalo (18-26) softball team come from behind and beat Niagara University (11-26), 5-3, Tuesday afternoon at Niagara Field.

Barstad hit a single to right-center field that scored Marcy Hansen and Mary Russell. The Bulls took the lead in the top of the seventh. Kerry Cafazzo led off with a triple and then scored on a wild pitch. Russell then hit a two-run double to right center field.

Hansen was 2 for 3 and Barstad 2 for 4. Niagara was led by senior Linzi Scarfone (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls), who was 2 for 3 with a RBI.

Niagara took a 3-0 lead in the first inning when freshman Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) singled in sophomore Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West). Scarfone then doubled in Healy, and Scarfone scored on a Buffalo error.

Buffalo scored its first run of the game when Barstad hit a solo home run to center field.

The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled. Niagara plays its final home game of the year Wednesday when it hosts St. Bonaventure at 3 p.m.
