Purple Eagles Drop Single Game to Saint Peter’s


Sophomore Nicole Sum was 2 for 3 Monday vs. Saint Peter's.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University softball team (11-25, 2-11) dropped a single game, 8-4, to Saint Peter’s College (13-31, 1-10) Monday afternoon at Niagara Field.

Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year candidate Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) was 3 for 3 at the plate and hit her school record eighth home run of the year and third two-run dinger in the last two days. Sophomore Nicole Sum (Burnaby, B.C.) was 2 for 3 with two runs.

Saint Peter’s scored three runs in the sixth inning to break open a 5-4 game and earn its first MAAC victory of the season.

Jess Gonzalez doubled to right field to score two runs. Pinch runner Sarai Lavandero then scored on a Niagara error.

Niagara struck first when Niagara Athlete of the Week Healy doubled to left center field to score Sum.

Saint Peter’s tied the game in the top of the second when Nikki Melchiorre hit a home run to straight-away centerfield.

The Peahens took a 4-1 lead in the top of the third when Julie Saporito hit a two-run double to left center field. She then scored on a ground out.

Healy brought Niagara within one in the bottom of the third when she hit her school record eighth home run of the year to left center field.

Saint Peter’s added one in the fourth when Chrissy Gannon scored on a sacrifice fly.

Niagara came within one run in the fifth when senior Linzi Scarfone (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) dropped a bunt with bases loaded to score sophomore Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West).

The Purple Eagles return to action Tuesday when they host Big Four rival Buffalo at 3 p.m. at Niagara Field.
