Softball Drops Two to Iona


Senior Jamie Horn had two hits vs. Iona Monday.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Senior Jamie Horn and freshman Tory Healy each collected a pair of hits despite the Niagara University softball team (9-23, 1-9) losing two games, 3-0 and 3-2, to Iona College Monday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Horn (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) and Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) each registered singles in both games. The Purple Eagles had a combine seven hits in the doubleheader.

Niagara returns to the friendly confines of Niagara Field on Wednesday when it hosts St. Francis (Pa.) in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.

Game 1 - Iona 3, Niagara 0

Iona struck early when it registered two runs in the first inning. Alison Higgs walked, went to second on a single, reached third after a walk and then scored on a RBI single by Stacy Moyer. Alex Sprague scored the second run when she was walked home.

Niagara had a chance to score in the fourth when sophomore Nicole Sum (Burnaby, B.C.) walked and then Healy singled to left field. The Purple Eagles were then left stranded after a strikeout.

The Gaels final run came in the sixth when Moyer scored on a sacrifice fly from Laura Stott.

Freshman Brooke Viola (Los Alamitos, Calif.) took the loss on the mound, throwing five innings and giving up six hits.

Game 2 - Iona 3, Niagara 2

After a scoreless first inning, Iona took a 3-0 lead when Danielle Grasso and Alexis Garbowski scored on a two-run triple down the left-field line from Sprague. Sprague then scored when Liz Hammel doubled to center field.

Niagara cut the lead to one, 3-2 in the top of the sixth when senior Lauren Dombrowski (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) walked, sophomore Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) singled, Sum walked and Healy then hit a two-run single to left field.

Freshman Tiffany McCrory (Albuquerque, N.M.) threw six innings, giving up nine hits, three earned runs and striking out seven.
