Purple Eagle Softball Travels to St. Bonaventure

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University softball team (7-13) looks to snap a three-game losing streak when it travels to St. Bonaventure, N.Y., to take on the Bonnies (7-14) today at McGraw-Jennings Field.

The Purple Eagles dropped a doubleheader to Syracuse University Wednesday, 5-1 and 8-0. Niagara managed just four hits in the series. St. Bonaventure is sporting a six-game winning streak. The Bonnies knocked off Cornell in a doubleheader Wednesday, 7-1 and 1-0.

Niagara is led offensively by freshman Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) and sophomore Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca). Healy is hitting a team-leading .357 with a squad-best 20 hits, three doubles, a triple, three home runs and 14 RBI. The second baseman also has a .607 slugging percentage. Baker is hitting .328 with 20 hits, three doubles and a home run.

On the mound, the freshmen tandem of Brooke Viola (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and Tiffany McCrory (Albuquerque, N.M.) have ERA’s of 3.48 and 3.62, respectively. Viola is 5-4 on the season in 10 appearances and has 20 strikeouts. McCrory is 2-6 with 12 appearances and 28 strikeouts.

St. Bonaventure is led by a trio of seniors. Laurie Stone is hitting .323 with a team-best 20 hits and 10 RBI. Lauren Krieger is hitting .298 with 17 hits and eight RBI. Kim Dodson has a team-leading 10 runs and four doubles.

On the pitch, sophomore Christine Keleher and freshman Brianna Bricker each have a 3.57 ERA. Keleher has a 4-8 record and made 11 starts in 12 appearances. She has 33 strikeouts and is allowing opponents to hit .246. Bricker is 3-4 in nine appearances. She has a team-best 34 strikeouts and foes are hitting .236.

In last year’s meeting, Niagara swept the series with the Bonnies in St. Bonaventure, winning 2-1 in both games. In the first game, Baker had two doubles, including the game-winning double in the sixth inning. In the nightcap, the Purple Eagles scored two runs on two hits in the second inning for the win.
