Baker's blast powers Purple Eagles to win

Lisa Baker hit a game-winning, three-run home run Friday to power the Purple Eagles past Sacred Heart.

BALTIMORE, Md. - Sophomore shortstop Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y.) hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to power Niagara to a 5-4 win over Sacred Heart Friday in the UMBC Dawg Pound Classic.

Baker's homer was the Purple Eagles' third of the game. Freshman Tori Healy (Las Vegas) hit a solo shot in the second inning and senior Linzi Scarfone (Niagara Falls) added a solo round-tripper in the fifth inning.

In the seventh, senior Jamie Horn (Youngstown, N.Y.) singled to open the frame before freshman Melissa Markle (Orchard Park, N.Y.) walked. Baker then hit her three-run, game-winning blast.

Freshman Brooke Viola (Los Alamitos, Calif.) tossed a four-hitter to pick up the win.

Niagara also played UMBC and suffered a 5-3 loss as two Purple Eagle errors led to three runs. Sophomore Ashley Bognar (Tonawanda, N.Y.) delivered a two-run, pinch-hit double in the sixth inning.

The Purple Eagles will play one game in the Dawg Pound Classic Saturday against an opponent yet to be determined.
