BALTIMORE, Md. – The Niagara University softball team (3-1) went 1-1 Sunday to finish second in the UMBC Classic. The Purple Eagles lost to Delaware State (11-3), but then beat the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, 14-1.
In the loss to the Hornets, senior Jamie Horn (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) and sophomore Nicole Sum (Burnaby, B.C.) each went 2 for 3 and Horn added a stolen base. Junior Shannon Mongalise (Bethel Park, Pa.) and freshman Jamie Constantz (Endicott, N.Y.) were 1 for 3.
Rookie Tory Healy (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit a bases-loaded home run in the third inning to account for the Purple Eagles’ runs.
In the their second win in the Classic over UMES, Mongalise was 3 for 3 with two RBI, Sum 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI, senior Kristina Kilian (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) was 3 for 4 with a three-run home run in the second inning.
Also picking up hits were Healy (3 for 4), senior Amanda Baluch (Delanson, N.Y.) (1-3), Horn (1-2) Constantz (1-2, double) and freshman Melissa Markle (Orchard Park, N.Y./West Seneca West) (2 for 3).
On the mound, freshman Brooke Viola (Los Alamito, Calif.) picked up her second win of the year, throwing a two hitter with three strikeouts in five innings of work.
Niagara returns to action March 19 when it meets Florida A&M in the Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla.
