Purple Eagles Run Record to 2-0 at UMBC Spring Classic

Sophomore Lisa Baker is 6 for 7 in the UMES Spring Classic so far this weekend.

BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca) scored on an error in the third inning to tally the Niagara University softball team’s (2-0) only run to beat the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, 1-0, Saturday morning in the UMBC Spring Classic.

Baker singled, reached second on an error and then scored when senior Kristina Kilian’s (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) fly ball to right field was dropped. Baker had two of the Purple Eagles’ five hits on the day.

Freshman Tiffany McCrory (Albuquerque, N.M.) pitched a one-hit shut out with nine strikeouts.

UMES threatened once in the game. With bases loaded and no outs, McCrory struck out the Hawks’ number three batter, senior Jamie Horn (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) snagged a fly ball in centerfield and then got an UMES runner caught in a run down.

Niagara continues action in the Classic Sunday when it plays Delaware State at 9:30 a.m. A win would put the Purple Eagles in the championship game later in the game.
