Miles Powers Niagara Past St. Bonaventure, 101-88


Junior Lorenzo Miles scored a game-high 28 points in a win over St. Bonaventure Monday night.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Junior Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Niagara University men’s basketball team to a 101-88 non-conference win over St. Bonaventure (1-1) Monday night in front of a sold-out Gallagher Center (2,400) crowd. The win gives Niagara a 2-0 mark on the young season and marks the 18th consecutive home win, a school record.

Junior Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) also had the scoring touch as he finished with a career-best 22 points and a team-best four assists for the Purple Eagles. Sophomore Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) tied his career high of 21 points, set last season against St. Bonaventure. Fisher and Miles each made four three-point field goals.

Niagara senior James Mathis (Newark, N.J.) recorded 10 points and 11 rebounds for his third career double-double while junior J.R. Duffey (Fort Worth, Texas) also recorded his third career double-double as he had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Both teams started the game with outstanding shooting as Niagara took a 56-51 lead at the half. Niagara made 21 of 37 field-goal attempts (56.8 percent), including six three-point field goals, while St. Bonaventure was 21 of 38 (55.3 percent).

Miles and Brown each scored 15 first-half points to lead the Purple Eagles. The Bonnies had Ahmad Smith with 14 first-half points while Patrick Lottin added 13 points in a reserve role. Niagara opened the game with a 7-1 run and never trailed. However, due to its hot-shooting performance, St. Bonaventure would not go away, cutting the lead to two points, 42-40, on a three-pointer by Lottin with 3:55 to play in the half. Miles and Brown hit back-to-back three-pointers to put the Niagara lead to six, 48-42. Duffey and Brown each scored four points to close the half and give Niagara the 56-51 lead.

Miles’ fourth three-pointer of the game, with 15:29 to play, moved him into the program’s all-time top 10 list with 91. That three-pointer pushed the Niagara lead to 12, 69-57. The Purple Eagles closed the game by making 13 of its last 14 free throws, including 12 consecutive. Niagara made 27 of 30 free throws in the contest.

Niagara plays at St. John’s Saturday in a 7 p.m. game.

·                     Juniors Lorenzo Miles and J.R. Duffy have each started in 32 games after starting their second consecutive game this evening. While senior James Mathis has started 24 career games.

·                     Niagara has hit at least one three-point field goal in each of its last 177-straight games.

·                     Mathis registers his first block of the season tonight, the 12th of his career.

·                     Miles moved into 10th on the career three-point field goals with 90.

·                     Niagara shot 56.8 (21-37) in the first half. The last time it shot 50 percent-or-better from the field in a half was in the MAAC Championship game vs. Rider on March 7. The Purple Eagles shot 54.5 percent (18-33) in the first half.

·                     Junior Clif Brown scored a career-high 22 points tonight, bettering his previous record of 19 points scored while at Kent State in 2002-03. Brown also achieved his career high tonight in field goals attempted with 17.

·                     Miles scored a career-high 28 points tonight, beating his previous record of 18 points. He also tied his career high of most field goals made in one game. He also shot 4 for 4 from three-point range.

·                     Junior Barry Durosier tied his career high in rebounds tonight with five.

·                     Junior Charron Fisher had a career highs in three-point field goals and attempts when he went4 for. He also set career highs in field-goals made (7), field-goal attempts (13) and tied his career high in points with 21.

·                     Sophomore Stanley Hodge receives played a personal-best 16 minutes.

·                     Niagara set the school record with an 18-game home-winning streak.

·                     Tonight’s game was the 66th time Niagara has scored 100-or-more points in a game. The last time it reached the century mark was in an overtime loss at Rider (113-106, 2/26/05).
