JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference competition Saturday afternoon at Saint Peter’s College.
The men’s team extended its winning streak to four-straight meets with a 72-33 win over Canisius College and an 80-24 victory over Saint Peter’s. The women’s team snapped a three-meet losing streak with a 78-30 win over Manhattan, an 80-32 win over Canisius and a 99-10 victory over Saint Peter’s. The Purple Eagle men are now 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the MAAC, and the women are 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the league.
Winning events for the women’s squad was freshman Hope Wiles (Baltimore, Md.) in the 200 free (2:03.94) and the 500 free (5:29.58); junior Heather Link (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) in the 100 back (1:03.79); the 200 free relay team of freshman Lindsay Douglass (Clovis, Calif.), sophomore Mariah Glass (Oswego, N.Y.), freshman Sara Fortini (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and Wiles (1:49.14); and the 200 medley relay of Link, freshman Mackenzie Pochatko (Pendleton, N.Y./Starpoint), senior Jodi Kennis (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda), and senior Kelly Kennedy (York, N.Y.) (1:57.10).
Registering double wins on the men’s team were freshman Ray DeWire (Tamaqua, Pa.) in the 1000 free (10:38.54) and 500 free (5:08.79); freshman Zak Brown (Bakersfield, Calif.) in the 200 free (1:46.94) and the 100 free (48.73) and junior Dave Germain (Oswego, N.Y.) in the one- and three-meter diving events.
Also finishing first in events were sophomore James Polito (Reading, Pa.) in the 50 free (22.73), sophomore Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) in the 200 IM (2:00.89) and the 200 free relay team of Brown, freshman Joe Moeller (Bethel Park, Pa.), Garvey and Polito (1:29.26).
Niagara returns to action Dec. 2-3 when it swims at Loyola College vs. the Greyhounds, Marist College and Catholic University.
