NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened their seasons Friday with a loss to Duquesne University. The men were beaten 129-93, while the women fell, 170-57. Both Purple Eagle squads are now 0-1, while the Dukes improve to 1-0.
On the men’s side, sophomore Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) was a double winner taking the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Garvey’s IM time was 2:03.38, while he swam the butterfly in 54.04.
Also placing first for the men were freshman Joe Moeller (Bethel Park, Pa.) in the 200 freestyle (1:46.21) and rookie Zak Brown (Bakerfield, Ca.) in the 500 freestyle (4:58.28).
For the women, three Purple Eagles finished second in the meet. Freshman Allison Carr (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut and placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.17), junior Kelly Kennedy (York, N.Y.) was second in the 500 free (25.93) and freshman Hope Wiles (Baltimore, Md.) second in the 1,650 free (17:45.00)
The men’s team returns to action Oct. 23 vs. New Hampshire in Burlington, Vt. The women will also be in action as they face both Vermont and New Hampshire.
