NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Canisius College (8-12) scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to beat Niagara University (8-14) Tuesday in a softball game at the Demske Sports Complex.
The Purple Eagles trailed 1-0 until the third inning when sophomore Shannon Mongalise (Bethel Park, Pa.) scored on a wild pitch.
The Golden Griffins scored the game-tying run when Beth Enk opened the fourth inning with a triple to right field and then scored on an error. The game-winning run came when Temp Coelho-Freeman reached base on an error, went to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a ground out.
Niagara pulled within one, 3-2, in the sixth inning when senior Colleen Larsen (Beiseker, Alberta) singled up the middle and freshman Nicole Sum (Burnby, B.C.) doubled her home.
Golden Griffin Courtney Piar struck out the side in the top of the seventh to earn the save. Andrea Bunten won her fourth game of the season, throwing four innings and allowing three hits, a run and striking out nine. Niagara senior Tegan Bennett (Stouffville, Ont.) took the loss, pitching six inning and allowing five hits.
Sum was 2 for 3 for Niagara and Caitlin Lever and Enk were 2 for 3 for Canisius.
The Purple Eagles return to action Friday when they travel to Loudonville, N.Y. to play Siena College in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
