NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University softball team (8-13) went 3-2 in the Radford Highlander Classic this weekend after beating Radford, 8-3, and Maryland Eastern Shore, 13-4, and losing to Albany State, 5-1.
The Purple Eagles open their 2004 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season Tuesday when they travel south to play a doubleheader with cross-town rival Canisius. First pitch is at 3 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.
Game 1 - Albany State 5, Niagara 1
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Niagara gave up three runs to lose its second game in the Classic.
The Purple Eagles scored their only run of the contest when junior Jamie Horn (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on senior Lauren Dombrowski’s (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) single.
Game 2 - Niagara 8, Radford 3
Niagara pounded out 11 points and senior Andrea Crapo (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) threw a five hitter to help the Purple Eagles win their seven game of the season.
Senior Colleen Larsen (Beiseker, Alberta) was 3 forf 4, junior Kristina Killian (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) was 2 for 4 with a three-run home run in the second inning, freshman Nicole Sum (Burnaby, B.C.) was 2 for 3 with two doubles and Dombrowski was 2 for 2.
Game 3 - Niagara 13, Maryland Eastern Shore 4
Senior Kristina Killian picked up her first win of the season, throwing a four hitter. Freshman Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca) was 3 for 3 and Horn was 3 for 3 with a three-run home run in the first inning.
