Niagara Softball Drops Four at Rebel Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Niagara University softball team (0-6) lost four games at the Rebel Spring Games at the Osceola and Oren Brown Fields.

The Purple Eagles lost to Toledo, 7-3, and Providence 8-7, on Tuesday and then fell to Virginia Tech, 3-0, and to Gardner Webb, 4-0, today.

In the Toledo game, sophomore Shannon Mongalise (Bethel Park, Pa.) was 1 for 2 with two RBI. Graduate student Cheryl Julicher (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North) was 2 for 3 and freshman Nicole Sum (Burnaby, B.C.) and Jamie Horn (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) each had hits.

The Purple Eagles came close to winning their first game of the season, but Providence scored the winning run in the ninth inning for the 8-7 win. Senior Lauren Dombrowski (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) was 1 for 2 and senior Amy Dulski (Springville, N.Y.) had a hit and RBI.

Against Gardener Webb, Niagara had five hits and junior Amanda Baluch (Delanson, N.Y.) went 3 for 3.

In today’s late game vs. Virginia Tech, freshman Lisa Baker (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca) and senior Colleen Larson (Beiseker, Alberta) each had hits, and senior Ashley Barber (Kelowna, B.C.) recorded six strikeouts on the mound.

Niagara continues play in the Rebel Spring Games when it plays Sacred Heart and University of Pennsylvania Thursday, and Lehigh and Youngstown State Friday.
