Purple Eagles Third, Fourth at UB Invitational After First Day


Christen Kane earned 26 points in the 200 and 400 IM events in the UB Invitational Saturday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are in third and fourth place, respectively, after the first day of competition at the UB Invitational in the Alumni Arena Natatorium on the UB North campus.

The men’s squad tallied 184 points and are behind UB with 823 points and St. Bonaventure with 788 points. Colgate is in fourth place with 14 points. The women’s team has 246 points and trails UB (767.50), St. Bonaventure (643) and Akron (356). Colgate is in fifth with 56.50 points.

Junior Christen Kane finished fifth in the 400 IM (5:04.93) and seventh in the 200 IM (2:22.15) and picked up 26 points for Niagara. Senior Alicia Guerrette placed sixth in the 400 IM with a lifetime best 5:27.74. The 200 medley relay team of Heather Link, Karolina Bazylewicz, Jodi Kennis and Traci Liberi placed fifth in a time of 1:56.46. Bazylewicz finished eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.24) and Liberi was 14th in the 50 free (25.89).

On the men’s side, freshman Dave Germain placed sixth in three-meter diving with 307.20 points. Junior Brian Griffin finished seventh in the 100 breatstroke (1:01.83). Andrew Farnham dropped 10 seconds off his best 500 free time (5:15.08) and Joseph Kirchgraber also posted a personal-best (5:56.91) in the 500 free. Kevin Klein had a lifetime best in the 100 fly (55.03).

The Invitational begins at 10 a.m. Sunday.
