Swimming & Diving Host Fifth Consecutive Meet

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams concludes a five-meet home stand Saturday when they host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rivals Manhattan College and Canisius College at 1 p.m. in the Oxy Aquatic Center in the Kiernan Recreation Center on the Monteagle Ridge campus.

The Purple Eagle women’s swimming and diving team enters the weekend on a winning streak. The teams have beaten their last four opponents and are 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the league.

In her last outing, captain Traci Liberi (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville) won two individual events and was a member of the first place 200 free relay team. The senior set season bests in the 50 free (24.93) and the 100 free (54.57).

Canisius enters the meet on a seven-meet losing streak, and are winless (0-3) against conference opponents. In the Golden Griffins’ last two outings, they have lost to Niagara twice, 89-20, on Oct. 30 and, 180-49, on Nov. 6.

Manhattan is riding a two-meet winning streak after defeating Sacred Heart (105-99) and Bridgeport (79-58) last weekend. The Lady Jaspers sport a 3-2 overall record and a 0-1 mark in MAAC action.

The Niagara men’s teams has been idle since Oct. 30 and will put their 2-0 overall and MAAC records on the line against Canisius.

In their last outing, the Purple Eagles defeated the Golden Griffins, 141-57, Oct. 30. Canisius will be looking for its first victory of the season after dropping five meets, including its lone MAAC meet to Niagara.

Purple Eagle freshman Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) and junior Kevin Klein (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) each completed a trifecta in their last outing. Garvey won the 200 free (1:47.11) and the 200 butterfly (2:06.57), while Klein won the 1000 free (10:47.89) and the 500 free (5:05.55). Both were also on the 200 free relay team that won in 1:29.27.
