NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finish a three-meet homestand when they host Canisius and Sacred Heart Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Oxy Aquatic Center on the Monteagle Ridge campus.
The men’s team swims Canisius in a dual meet, and the Purple Eagle women’s team swims Canisius and Sacred Heart in a tri-meet.
The Niagara men’s squad enters the weekend 1-0 on the season after beating Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Fairfield, 140-96. The young team won 10 of 13 events and were led by the freshmen trio of Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush), Joe Lawton (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) and Kevin Betts (Victor, N.Y./Victor).
Canisius sits 0-2 on the season after losing to the Virginia Military Institute (121-55) and Old Dominion (107-62).
Niagara beat its cross-town rival twice last year in a dual meet and in a tri-meet.
The Purple Eagle women’s swimming and diving team will be looking for its first victory of the season after losing three times last weekend. Niagara lost 134-107 to Fairfield, 130.5-107.5 to Vermont and 147-93 to Youngstown State.
Sophomore Heather Link (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) won the 50 free and 100 back against Vermont and Youngstown State and the 100 back in the Fairfield meet.
The Golden Griffins will also be looking for a win. They opened their season 0-2 with losses to Radford (124-60) and Old Dominion (114-86). Sacred Heart is 0-2, dropping meets with St. Francis (Pa.) (116-98) and Wagner (98-80).
