Niagara Softball Swept by Siena

Niagara University, NY (May 2, 2003) - The Niagara softball team (7-25, 6-8 MAAC) was swept Friday afternoon by the visiting Siena Saints. The Purple Eagles could not manage any runs in the first game losing 6-0, and in the night dropped the game by a score of 7-2. In the two games junior Amy Dulski (Springville, NY) went four for eight at the plate with four singles.

In game one Siena took the lead in the third inning with two runs on an RBI double by Sarah Rose. The Saints would add another two in the fourth on another RBI double by Becky Brockman, and a third run in the inning on a passed ball to put them up 5-0. The Saints would get their final run of the game in the sixth for a final of 6-0. Ashleigh Barber (Kelowna, BC) got the start for the Purple Eagles pitching five inning, giving up six runs on six hits. Tegan Bennett (Stoufville, Ont.) came into the game and pitched the last two innings giving up no hits.

In the nightcap the Saints took an early 3-0 lead on a three run homerun by Sarah Rose in the first inning. They would add to their lead in the third with two runs on an RBI single by Carrie Getz that brought in two runs to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Saints. Niagara would climb back with two runs in the home half of the third inning on an RBI double by junior co-captain Colleen Larsen (Beiseker, AB). It would to be not enough on this afternoon as the Saints would add two more insurance runs in the fourth to make the final 7-2. All three of Niagara's starting pitchers saw action in the nightcap. Kristina Killian (Grand Island, NY) pitched two thirds of an inning before handing over the duties to Bennett who went five and a third innings surrendering four runs on ten hits. Barber came into the game in the seventh retiring the Saints in four batters.

The Purple Eagles will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 12 noon in their last two MAAC games of the season. They will face the Marist Red Foxes at the Niagara Softball Field.
