Niagara University, NY (April 30, 2003) The Niagara softball team (6-23, 6-6 MAAC) dropped two games Wednesday afternoon at home to St. Bonaventure 7-1 in the first game and 4-3 in the nightcap. Junior co-captain Colleen Larsen (Beiseker, AB) led the way with her team leading third homerun of the season.
In the first game the Bonnies opened the scoring in the third inning with three runs. The first run came on an error, followed by an RBI triple by Tricia Hildebrand. Third baseman Lisa Hess (Youngstown, NY) caught the ball in foul territory and then went out of bounds causing the base runners to advance and scoring the Bonnies third run to make the score 3-0. The Bonnies would add another two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to open the gap to 5-0. Niagara's only run of the afternoon came in the sixth when Larsen parked one over the center field fence. St. Bonaventure would add their final two runs of the game in the seventh on Niagara's two errors.
In the nightcap Kristina Killian (Grand Island, NY) walked two batters in the first inning combined with a throwing error by third baseman Hess to give the Bonnie an early 2-0 lead. The Bonnies would add a third run on a solo homerun by Laurie Stone in the third. A three error inning for St. Bonaventure in the fifth allowed Niagara to get on the scoreboard with two runs cutting the lead to 3-2. The seventh would prove to be a good one for each team as the Bonnies would add another run in the top of the inning as insurance. Niagara started to rally in the home half of the inning getting one on Angie Clarke's (Grafton, Ont.) RBI single to score Bradi Cochrane (Harriston, Ont.), as Heather Denby would get Dulski and Mongalise to fly out to end the game.
On the mound in the first game was Ashleigh Barber (Kelowna, BC). Barber surrendered seven runs on seven hits, four walks and struck out six batters. In the second game Killian got the start pitching three innings giving up three runs on four hits, striking out two batters. Tegan Bennett (Stoufville, Ont.) came in in relief in the fifth inning giving up one run on two hits.
Jamie Horn (Youngstown, NY), Shannon Mongalise (Bethel Park, PA) and Hess all went two for three in the first game.
The Purple Eagles will return to action on Friday at home when they will face the Siena Saints in an important conference doubleheader. The games are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
