Fairfield, Conn. -- Mellissa Santos tossed a one-hit shutout in the first game, and picked up a win in relief in the second game to lift Fairfield University (23-23 overall, 8-4 MAAC) to a sweep of Niagara University (6-20 overall, 5-5 MAAC). Amy Dulski (Springville, NY) had three of the five Niagara hits in the two games
Santos did not allow a base hit until Dulski singled down the right field line in the top of the sixth inning. She gave up a lead off walk in the second inning, and then retired the next 12 batters until Dulski's base hit. Fairfield scored a single run in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Ellen Sarosy drove home the first run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Maria DiPilato sent home the second run with a base hit down the right field line, scoring Diana Fasano. The final run was manufactured by Sarosy, as she singled, stole second, stole third and came home when the throw to third base was mishandled.
In the nightcap, Niagara opened the scoring with a pair of an unearned runs in the second inning. Angie Clarke (Grafton, Ont.) sent home one of the runs in the inning with a base hit. Santos relieved starter Christy Urban with two out in the second inning, and induced Colleen Larsen (Beiseker, AB) to ground out for the final out. The Stags tied the score in the bottom of the third, as Megan Miller laced a two-run single down the left-field line. Fairfield took the lead for good in the fourth inning, when Sarosy singled past the first baseman. The hit got past the right fielder, allowing Sarosy to circle the bases. Catcher Shannon Logan picked up a pair of RBI later in the game with two singles, one in the fifth and one in the sixth. Santos pitched five-plus inings, striking out seven and giving up two hits to record her 14th win. She finished the day with 18 strikeouts.
On the mound for the Purple Eagles in game one this afternoon was Ashleigh Barber (Kelowna, BC). Barber pitched the complete game giving up three walks, four hits and three runs. In the second game Kristina Killian and Tegan Bennett (Stoufville, Ont.) combined in the loss. Killian pitched 5.2 inning giving up six runs on nine hits and Bennett finished the fifth giving up three hits.
The Purple Eagles will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 12 noon when they will face the Iona Gales.
