Softball Falls To Cross-Town Rival

Niagara University, NY (April 23, 2003) - The Niagara (4-18) softball team fell this afternoon for the third time this season to the University at Buffalo, 5-1. Amy Dulski's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh spoiled Stacy Evans shutout.

Buffalo got on the board in the first inning with two unearned runs, one on a passed ball and one on a throwing error. The Bulls would add another two runs in the third inning with an RBI single by Kelly Malone. Buffalo added its final run of the afternoon in the fourth inning when Marce Ross stole third and eventually scored on a throwing error by Amanda Baluch (Delanson, NY). It looked as though Buffalo would get a couple more in the top of the seventh, with bases loaded and no one out. Ashleigh Barber (Kelowna, BC) got the Purple Eagles out of the jam striking out one of the batters, forcing the next batter to line out to third and getting the third to ground out. Niagara spoiled the shutout in the bottom of the seventh when Colleen Larsen (Beiseker, AB) started the inning with a double to center. Larsen would be brought home for the Purple Eagles only run of the afternoon when Amy Dulski (Springville, NY) hit an RBI double.

Barber got the start on the mound for the Purple Eagles Wednesday afternoon. Barber threw the complete game, striking out five batters, and allowed seven hits.

The Purple Eagles will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they will travel across town for a MAAC doubleheader against Canisius. The games will be played at the Demske Sports Complex at 3:00 p.m.
