Softball Falls Twice at Youngstown State

Canfield, Ohio - The Niagara softball team (4-17, 3-3 MAAC) ended its three game winning streak Tuesday afternoon at McCune Park losing 2-1, and 3-0 to Youngstown State.

In the opener, Ashleigh Barber (Kelowna, B.C.) tossed a complete-game five-hitter with four strikeouts. Barber also was string at the plate getting one hit and scoring Niagara's only run of the day. In game two, Kristina Killian (Grand Island, NY) pitched two an two thirds innings allowing three runs on six hits. Tegan Bennett (Stoufville, Ont.) came in in relief and finished the game surrendering just one hit striking out two batters.

In game one, freshman Aimee Soller, who went 2-for-2, ripped a single to center field to score Amber Smith to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead after four innings. Niagara tied the game with an unearned run in the top of the fifth. Barber started the inning with a single up the middle. Lauren Dombrowski (Lancaster, NY) then came to the plate and laid down a bunt and beat the throw to first putting runners on first and second with one out. Amy Dulski (Springville, NY) came up to bat and reached on an error to pitcher Ashley Lockmiller that allowed Barber to score the Purple Eagles only run of the day. The Penguins regained the lead, 2-1, in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Tiffany Patteson doubled to left field to lead off the frame and moved to third on a passed ball. Patteson then scored on a field error to give YSU its final margin of victory.

In the nightcap, freshman Codi Bise blasted a two-run home run, her second of the season, in the bottom of the second to give YSU a 2-0 advantage. The Penguins added another run in the third on Liz Holt's RBI-double. Niagara threatened in the top of the seventh loading the bases with no outs, but Hartman pitched herself out of the jam to preserve the shutout.

The Purple Eagles are scheduled to be back in action Thursday afternoon when they will travel to St. Bonaventure for a doubleheader. Game time will be 3:00 p.m..
