Softball Gets First MAAC Win

Niagara University, NY (April 13, 2003) - The Niagara (2-15, 1-3 MAAC) softball team split its conference doubleheader with St. Peter's Sunday afternoon losing the first game 5-2 and hanging on for a 4-3 win in the second game. Niagara handed St. Peter's just its second conference loss of the season. Junior co-captain Angie Clarke's (Grafton, Ont.) RBI single in the bottom of the second in the second game to drive in two runners gave the Purple Eagles their first conference win of the season. Jamie Horn had a strong day at the plate going two for three in the second game.

In the first game the Peahens went up by a score of 1-0 in the top of the first on a double by Marsha Kelley that drove in Nikki Merchiorre from second. Niagara came back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning with one run. Shannon Mongalise (Bethel Park, PA) got the inning started with a single to left field. Colleen Larsen (Beiseker, AB) moved Mongalise over to third with her team leading fifth double of the season. Mongalise would eventually score on a fielder's choice by Kelly Honsberger (Pickering, Ont). St. Peter's offense kept plugging away adding three runs in the second and one in the third to go ahead 5-1. Niagara managed to get one more run in the fourth on an RBI double by Amanda Baluch (Delanson, NY) to drive in Honsberger from third and make the score 5-2.

Ashleigh Barber got the start in game one for the Purple Eagles giving up five runs on eight hits. Barber pitched the complete game striking out eight batters, surrendering not one walk.

In the night cap the Purple Eagles got all four of their runs in the second inning. The Purple Eagles started the inning with back to back singles by Honsberger and Horn. Baluch would load the bases, and Bradi Cochrane (Harriston, Ont.) would come to the plate with one out. Cochrane hit an RBI single that brought in two runs and advanced Baluch to third. Lisa Hess (Youngstown, NY) would ground out next to make it two outs and bring Clarke to the plate. Clarke singled bringing home another two runs to put the Purple Eagles up 4-0. The Peahens attempted to spoil the Purple Eagles day in the sixth inning scoring three runs on RBI doubles by Nikki Melchiorre and Marsha Kelley, and an RBI single by Aimee Barcelona.

Kristina Killian got her first win of the year on the mound, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out three batters. Barber came in, in relief in the sixth inning giving up one run and retiring five batters before handing over the duties to Tegan Bennett (Stoufville, Ont) for the last out of the game and the save. A first this afternoon for the Niagara pitchers as they did not give up one walk in either game.

The Purple Eagles will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they will face Manhattan in a 12 noon start on the Niagara softball field.
