Lawrenceville, NJ (March 29, 2003) - The Niagara softball team (1-12, 0-2) were swept Saturday afternoon by the Rider Broncs in its first MAAC weekend of the season. In the first game, a 3-2 come from behind win for the Broncs was highlighted by freshman Shannon Mangalise's (Bethel Park, PA) first career homerun as a Purple Eagle. In the second game of the day the Purple Eagles fell by a score of 14-1. Leading the Purple Eagles offense Saturday was junior co-captain Colleen Larsen (Beiseker, AB) who went five for six at the plate on the day with two doubles and three singles.
In the first game of the afternoon, Mongalise sent a pitch to deep center over the fence as the first batter of the game to give the Purple Eagles an early 1-0 lead. Rider tied the game in the fifth inning, Maddy Boulden doubled to center and would eventually score on an error. The Purple Eagles battled back and took the lead for the second time in the sixth inning. Amanda Baluch (Delanson, NY) doubled to start the inning, and would be replaced by Amy Dulski (Springville, NY) to pinch run. Angie Clarke (Grafton, Ont.) followed with a walk, and Bradi Cochrane (Harriston, Ont.) dropped a sacrifice bunt down the third base line and got on base with a throwing error by Irena Burgos. Dulski scored on the play to give to the Purple Eagles the 2-1 lead. Amanda Tu hit a one out single to centerfield, scoring Jennifer Cullen with the winning run as the Broncs rallied from a one run seventh inning deficit for the win. Boulden scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
Ashleigh Barber (Kelowna, BC) got the start in the first game for the Purple Eagles pitching five and a third innings giving up one run on four hits and striking out two batters. Tegan Bennett (Stoufville, Ont.) came in relief and earned the loss giving up three runs on three hits.
In the second game of the afternoon, Niagara fell behind early surrendering four runs in the both of the first two innings, giving the Broncs and 8-0 lead. The Broncs would add another three in each of the next two innings to mercy the Purple Eagles 14-1. Junior Brandey Weed went three for three with three RBI, a double, triple and two stolen bases. Junior Amanda Tu and freshman Kiera each added a home run for Rider (6-8, 2-0 MAAC). Fox had three RBI in the game with junior Courtney Weed adding two hits. The Purple Eagles lone run of the afternoon came in the top of the fifth inning after Baluch led off with her second double of the day. Amy Dulski came in to pinch run and stole third and would score on a single by Lisa Hess (Youngstown, NY).
In the second game, freshman Heather Beintema pitched a five-inning complete game, recording seven strikeouts for the win. Jill Koch (Tonawanda, NY) and Andrea Crapo (Lockport, NY) each pitched two innings for the Purple Eagles.
The Purple Eagles will be back in action Thursday afternoon when they travel to Cleveland State for a non-conference doubleheader. The games are scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
