Buffalo, NY (March 27, 2003) - The Niagara softball team extended its season record to 1-10 Thursday afternoon dropping a pair of games to cross-town rival University at Buffalo, 1-0 in the first game and 10-2 in the second game. The Purple Eagles ended their scoring drought in the second game scoring the teams first two runs in 14 innings.
In the first game of the day it got tight for the Purple Eagles in the fourth inning with the base loaded, one out and the score tied at zero. Lisa Wheat came to the plate for the Bulls and hit into a double play (home to first) to keep the score tied and get the Purple Eagles out of the inning. A one-out single to left field in the fifth inning by junior Breanne Nasti scored freshman Lauren Picciano to break the scoreless tie and give the Bulls a 1-0 lead which would prove to be the winner on this day. Niagara's Angie Clark (Grafton, Ont.) spoiled the no-hitter with a single up the middle in the sixth inning. Ashleigh Barber (Kelowna, BC) took the loss on the mound for the Purple Eagles, allowing just four hits and striking out four.
The Bulls got on the board early in game two when an RBI-single by junior Allison Round scored junior Marce Ross to make the score 1-0 for the Bulls. Buffalo then exploded for eight runs on eight hits in the third inning to break the game open and added one more in the fourth to give them a 10-0 lead. Niagara ruined pitcher Andrea Sage's attempt at a shutout with two runs in the top of the fifth. A two-out double by Amanda Baluch (Delanson, NY) scored Jamie Horn (Youngstown, NY) and an infield single by Barber scored Amy Dulski (Springville, NY), who was pinch-running for Baluch. Tegan Bennett (Stoufville, Ont.) went the distance for Niagara, giving up 12 hits and nine earned runs while striking out two. Hibner and Pace all drove in two runs for the Bulls in the game, and Ross was 3-for-3 from the plate with one RBI and two runs scored.
The Purple Eagles will be back in action Saturday on the road at Rider. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon. This will mark the first MAAC games of the 2003 season for the Purple Eagles.
