NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University swimming and diving team’s swept the Canisius Golden Griffins this afternoon, the men (2-2) winning 137-65 and the women (1-3) finishing on top 151-84 at Niagara’s Kiernan Pool.
On the men’s side, junior co-captain Nate Katz (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) was a dual winner in the 200 free (1:51.74) and the 100 fly (58.29) events. Senior co-captain Mike Yacos (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) also was a dual winner in the 50 (23.03) and 100 free (50.58) events. Sophomore Kevin Klein (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) finished first in the 200 medley (2:20.56) and the 100 backstroke (58.92). Katz, freshman Brandon Smith (Lockport,N.Y./Lockport), freshman Josh Nowasell (Bliss, N.Y./Letchworth) and freshman Steve Rumsey (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:48.82.
Junior co-captain Traci Liberi (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) led the women with two individual victories in the 100 (55.30) and 200 (2:04.15) free events and swam the third leg of the 400 free relay that included sophomore Jody Pangburn (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East), senior Christen Kane (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) and senior Ashley Churder (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) that had a winning time of 3:54.23. Kane also won two individual events, the 200 medley (2:25.96) and 200 fly (2:22.51).
"I am very pleased with the way we swam today," head coach Pete Thompson said. "Canisius came to our pool ready to swim and we met their challenge with gusto. I am also excited that we had several lifetime best swims today, especially for this point in the season."
Niagara travels next to Youngtown State Nov. 15 to take on the Penguins at the Beeghly Center at 2 p.m.
