Niagara Swimming & Diving Team Splits at Youngstown State

Junior Karolina Bazylewicz was a double winner Saturday at Youngstown State.

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO – The Niagara University women’s swimming and diving team improved its record to 2-4 on the season when it beat St. Francis (Pa.), 69-26, and lost to Youngstown State, 55-40, in a dual meet Saturday at Beeghly Natatorium on the Youngstown State campus in Youngstown, Ohio.

"I was please about today," Niagara head swimming and diving coach Peter Thompson said. "We were shooting for Youngstown State, didn’t get them, but we swam pretty well."

Junior Traci Liberi (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) had two first-place finishes on the day, winning the 100 free (55:35) and anchoring the 400 medley relay team (4:13.05) of freshman Heather Link (Niagara Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield), freshman Jody Kennis (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and junior Karolina Bazylewicz (Buffalo, N.Y./Hutch Tech). Liberi also placed second in the 50 free (25:38) and Kennis fourth (27:39).

Junior Christen Kane (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) won the 200 IM with her collegiate best 2:23.69 and Bazylewicz was first in the 200 breast (2:36.90). Bazylewicz was just over four seconds off the school record set by Stacy Saracene in 1998.

Niagara also got points from sophomore Jody Pangburn (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East) who finished second in the 200 fly (2:30.27), and Link and junior Danielle Hayes (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) were second and third, respectively in the 200 back. Hayes knocked off seven seconds to post her top collegiate time in the backstroke.

The Purple Eagles return to action next Saturday when they travel to Loudonville, N.Y., for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference meet against host Siena, Canisius and Fairfield at 1 p.m. in Siena College Pool.
