John Munro is in his 28th year at Niagara University, directing the sports medicine staff. Prior to becoming the head athletic trainer in 1995, Munro served as assistant athletic trainer under Ray Kist.

Munro coordinates the sports medicine staff and coverage for all 18 Division I sports at Niagara, while also serving as athletic trainer for men’s basketball and baseball. Additionally, he serves as the liaison between team physicians, student-athletes and coaches. Munro is also the sport supervisor for the volleyball and baseball programs. 

Munro has been a member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA), New York State Athletic Trainer’s and a District Two member since 1992. He has served as a National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examiner since 2000.

In 1998, Munro served as head athletic trainer for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Star team in Japan. He has also co-hosted the NCAA men’s basketball first and second rounds at HSBC Arena in Buffalo in 2000, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2014 as well as the NCAA men’s hockey Frozen Four in 2003.

Munro is a 1993 graduate of Canisius College with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and athletic training. He received his master’s in education from Niagara University in May of 1998 with a concentration in school counseling.

Munro and his wife, Amy, reside in Hamburg with their two sons, Kyle and Corey, and their daughter, Allyson.Â
