David Mitchell joined the Niagara men's basketball coaching staff following the conclusion of his collegiate playing career.

Mitchell will assist Head Coach Greg Paulus in team preparation and concentrate directly on the student-athlete experience. He will work with players one-on-one one and contribute to scouting preparations, including film breakdowns. Mitchell brings a wealth of collegiate playing experience that provides a unique perspective to the program. 

“Since his arrival on campus, David’s impact on our program has been immeasurable", said Paulus. "As a captain and student-athlete, his ability to lead and communicate contributed significantly to our success last season. In this new role, I know he will continue to positively lift those around him both on and off the court.”

Mitchell earned a master’s degree in Sport Management from Niagara University’s College of Hospitality, Sport, and Tourism Management in 2023. He will receive a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Niagara University in 2024. 

Mitchell played the 2022-23 season with Niagara, playing in all 31 games and making 18 starts. He averaged 4.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per contest, finishing the season with 22 steals and seven blocks. He scored a season-high 11 points in the MAAC Quarterfinal win over Siena (March 9). He recorded at least five rebounds in 11 games while finishing the season with a field goal percentage of 45.8 percent. 

Mitchell played three seasons at Brown (the Ivy League canceled the 2020-21 season due to Covid) and is a graduate transfer. In 2021-22, Mitchell appeared in 29 games for the Bears and started in 22. He averaged 3.8 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game and had a 40.9 percent field goal percentage. Over his career at Brown, he averaged 3.2 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game. Mitchell averaged a career-best 5.2 rebounds per game during the 2019-20 season. Mitchell received the Bernard V. Buonanno, Jr. '60 Award, which is given to the member of the varsity team who, through dedication in the classroom and on the court, has exemplified the true meaning of the scholar-athlete.
