Amherst, N.Y. — Niagara's women's tennis team turned in a dominant performance Saturday, defeating Siena 6-1 behind a strong doubles showing and five singles victories.
The Purple Eagles claimed the doubles point by winning two of three matches.
Larisa Kotok and
Gabriela Melo set the tone at No. 1, topping Andrea Vargas and Zaara Omar 6-3.
Saloni Tamang and
Valeria Mora followed with a 6-3 win at No. 2 over Manuela Gomez and Madeline De Faber-Schumacher to clinch the point. Siena's Reegan Mullaney and Selma Bellaouchi salvaged the No. 3 doubles match, defeating
Isabel Garcia and
Julia Clarke-Louie 6-3.
Niagara carried that momentum into singles, sweeping five of six flights. Garcia led the charge at No. 1, turning aside Siena's Manuela Gomez 6-1, 6-3. Kotok was equally commanding at No. 3, defeating Andrea Vargas 6-1, 6-1. Tamang posted a clean 6-2, 6-4 decision over Selma Bellaouchi at No. 4 to push the Purple Eagles to the brink of victory.
Melo delivered an emphatic three-set comeback at No. 2. After dropping the opening set 6-3, Melo rallied to win the second 6-4 and close out the match, securing the team victory for Niagara.
Clarke-Louie capped the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-0 win over De Faber-Schumacher at No. 6.
Siena's lone singles point came at No. 5, where Reegan Mullaney defeated Niagara's
Valeria Mora 6-0, 6-3.
