Niagara University, NY — Niagara fell to Merrimack 6-1 in men's tennis action Sunday.
The Warriors secured the doubles point with two wins, but Niagara's Logan Wong and Jose Maria Garcia provided a bright spot early, defeating Merrimack's Michael Schut and Ludolph Wiggett, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles to keep the Purple Eagles competitive. Merrimack's Strahinja Djukic and Tom Van Nooten won No. 2 doubles, 6-4, over Shravan Somasi and Damian Janiszewski, while Trey Pleasant and Juan Carlos Portilla Morales clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3 over Ary Bhawan and Sarosh Rustomjee.
Niagara's lone singles victory came from Janiszewski, who rallied past Van Nooten at No. 1 singles, dropping the first set 2-6 before taking the second 7-5 in a match-tiebreak finish, 10-5.
Merrimack swept the remaining five singles positions. Djukic defeated Garcia, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2, while Wiggett topped Bhawan by the same score at No. 3. Portilla Morales defeated Wong in a closely contested No. 4 match that went to a tiebreak in the second set, with Wong winning the opening set 6-2 before Portilla Morales took the second, 6-3, in a tiebreak. Pleasant defeated Rustomjee, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 5, and Milan Zivkovic dispatched Ekansh Shukla, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6 to close out the match.
