Former Purple Eagles Defenseman Niko Kovachis Returns to Niagara as Assistant Hockey Coach

LEWISTON, N.Y. – Niagara University Head Hockey Coach Jason Lammers announced today that Niko Kovachis has been named assistant coach for the Purple Eagles men's hockey program. Kovachis returns to his alma mater after a successful coaching career that has taken him through several prestigious programs.

"We are thrilled to welcome Niko back home to Niagara," said Coach Lammers. "His deep understanding of our program, combined with his coaching experience and passion for developing young players, makes him an ideal addition to our staff. Niko brings both the Purple Eagles perspective as a former player and the fresh insights he's gained as a coach for Chatham & Hobart."

Kovachis, 29, returns to Lewiston after most recently serving as an assistant coach at Hobart College, where he helped guide the Statesmen to two national championships over two seasons. His coaching journey also included a stop at Chatham University, building a reputation as a dedicated developer and recruiter.

A 2019 Niagara graduate, Kovachis was a four-year defenseman for the Purple Eagles from 2015-2019, serving as an alternate captain during his senior season. The Mississauga, Ontario native appeared in over 130 games during his collegiate career, contributing both offensively and defensively while establishing himself as a leader in the locker room.

"Coming back to Niagara feels like coming home," said Kovachis. "This program shaped me as both a player and a person, and I'm excited to help continue the tradition of excellence that defines Purple Eagles hockey. I look forward to working with our student-athletes and contributing to the championship culture we're building here."

During his playing career at Niagara, Kovachis was known for his hockey IQ, defensive reliability, and leadership qualities. His transition to coaching has been marked by his ability to connect with players and his detailed approach to the defensive aspects of the game.

"Niko's return represents the continuity and commitment to excellence that defines our program," added Coach Lammers. "Having former Purple Eagles return to Niagara as coaches demonstrates the strength of our hockey program and our commitment to providing our current student-athletes with the best possible guidance."

The Purple Eagles are coming off a 18-16-3 season and look to build on that momentum with Kovachis joining the coaching staff for the upcoming 2025-26 campaign.
