NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. — Niagara University men's ice hockey goaltender Charles-Edward Gravel has been named Atlantic Hockey America Goaltender of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Gravel earned the honor after backstopping the Purple Eagles to a sweep of #18/19 Bowling Green on the road. In Saturday's 2-1 win at Slater Family Ice Arena, he stopped 36 of 37 shots for a .973 save percentage, the highest save total of his season.
Bowling Green outshot Niagara 37-23 on Saturday, and Gravel faced heavy pressure throughout. After giving up an early first-period goal, he stopped all 16 shots he saw in the second period, including a late flurry that kept the game tied at 1-1 while Niagara was being outshot 16-6. The Purple Eagles took the lead for good in the third on Brayden Boehm's first goal in a Niagara uniform, and Gravel and the penalty kill held it through a long stretch of penalty killing to close out the win.
The Niagara win extended the program's winning streak over the Falcons to four games and moved the Purple Eagles to 3-3-0 on the season.
The Purple Eagles return to Dwyer Arena for their first home non-conference games of the season, hosting Union on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 24. Tickets are available through the Niagara Athletics ticket office.
