Niagara University, NY — Niagara (6-26, 4-13 MAAC) defeated Battle of the Bridge rival Canisius 9-7 in the final game of a three game MAAC series on Friday.
How it Happened
Canisius struck first in the top of the first with a two-RBI home run off the bat of Sofia Escoto. The Golden Griffins extended their lead to three with a solo homer from Morgan Cook.
Niagara got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with RBI singles from Sophia Marrero and Kaylee Haines. Canisius tacked on another run in the third but the Purple Eagles were able to take the lead with a two-RBI home run from Brianna Delaney, followed by a single from CJ Haney to plate Delaney. Lindsay Mayo walked in a run to make the lead 6-4.
The Purple Eagles made it a five run game in the fifth with a two-RBI single from Haney, followed by Haney scoring on an error from the Golden Griffins second baseman.
Canisius tried to mount a comeback plating three runs in the final three innings, but the Purple Eagles were able to hold on.
Aubrey Tamayo got the start in the circle for the Purple and White, throwing a complete game and earning the victory while striking out two batters.
