Niagara University, NY — Niagara (5-26, 3-13 MAAC) dropped a pair of conference games in a midweek doubleheader against Battle of the Bridge rival Canisius. The Purple Eagles dropped game one 2-1, before falling 11-3 (5) in the nightcap.
Game One
After four scoreless innings that saw Niagara record three base hits, both teams got on the scoreboard in the fifth. Canisius struck first in the top of the frame with an RBI single from Alyssa Cloutier. CJ Haney tied up the game in the bottom of the frame with a solo homer to left field.
The Golden Griffins took back the lead in the top of the sixth when Bailey Alatorre doubled to bring home a run. The Purple Eagles recorded one more base runner the rest of the game.
Aubrey Tamayo got the start for the Purple and White, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five batters. Sage Jackson came on to get the final out of the game.
Game Two
Both teams found the scoreboard in the first to start off the nightcap. Canisius plated two runs in the top half of the frame, while Niagara took the lead, plating three runs of their own. Hailey Cenname singled to bring home Natasha Limbani, then Sophia Marrero hit a two-RBI single to score two more runs.
The Golden Griffins regained the lead in the top of the second, scoring four runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Rosie Gomez. The next two innings would be scoreless.
Canisius put the game out of reach in the fifth and enacted the run rule plating five runs, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Tabitha von Kolen.
Jackson got the start in the nightcap allowing six runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work. Jenna Martin came in for relief, throwing 2.1 innings while Tamayo pitched the final inning.
