Fairfield, Conn. — Niagara (4-22, 2-9 MAAC) split a doubleheader in the first two games of a three game MAAC series against Fairfield, dropping the first game 15-0 (5) before taking the nightcap 5-3 at Alumni Softball Field.
Game One: Purple Eagles 0, Stags 15
Fairfield got off to a quick start putting up six runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-RBI home run off the bat of Delaney Whieldon. The Purple Eagles recorded their only hit of the contest in the top of the second inning thanks to Selah Moyer.
Fairfield continued to grow their lead in the third inning, plating five runs with a two-RBI single and three walks. The Stags added four more runs in the fourth to enact the run rule.
Sage Jackson got the start in the circle, throwing 2.1 innings, allowing 10 runs on eight hits. Jenna Martin came in for relief throwing the final 1.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven walks, striking out three batters.
Game Two: Purple Eagles 5, Stags 3
Niagara got on the board first in the nightcap, plating a run in the top of the first with Hailey Cenname crossing home plate. Fairfield took the lead in the third with an RBI triple.
The Purple Eagles took the lead in the top of the fifth inning with Moyer singling up the middle to plate Cenname, while Jolyn Gibbons hit a sac fly to bring home Lindsay Mayo.
Mayo homered to start the seventh inning, while Gibbons tallied her second RBI of the contest to plate Moyer and give the Purple Eagles a three run lead.
Fairfield tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the frame scoring once and getting the bases loaded with two outs but Niagara was able to close the door and hold on to the victory.
Aubrey Tamayo got the start in the nightcap for the Purple and White throwing 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits while striking out two batters. Jackson came in for the final two outs of the contest.
