Niagara University, N.Y. — Niagara (3-16, 1-4 MAAC) split a doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's in MAAC Softball in their home opener at Niagara Softball Field, winning 5-2 in the opener before losing a 5-3 decision.
Game 1: Niagara 5, Mount St. Mary's 2
Mount St. Mary struck first with a solo homer in the top of the second inning. The Purple Eagles answered right back in the bottom of the frame with three runs of their own. Sophia Marrero singled to plate Natasha Limbani, before CJ Haney hit a sacrifice fly to score Selah Moyer and Marrero.
Shayna Myshrall doubled Niagara's lead with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning to plate Brianna Delaney and Lindsay Mayo. Mount St. Mary's tacked on one more run in the top of the sixth but the Purple Eagles were able to hold on.
Starting pitcher Sage Jackson (3-5) threw a complete game, only allowing two runs — only one earned — on six hits. She struck out three and walked one.
Game 2: Niagara 2, Mount St. Mary's 5
The Mountaineers once again struck first in game two putting up a four run third inning, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Tristin Koerner. Mount St. Mary's tacked on their final run of the contest in the top of the fourth.
Myshrall accounted for the Purple Eagles two runs of game two in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to score Delaney and Mayo.
Jenna Martin threw 3.1 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, striking out two batters. Aubrey Tamayo came in for relief pitching 3.0 scoreless innings to wrap up the game.
