NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. — The Niagara Purple Eagles surrendered a power-play goal in overtime, falling to Army West Point 4-3 in a decisive game three at Dwyer Arena.
How it Happened
Niagara (18-16-3) battled back from a 3-2 deficit late in the third period when
Shane Ott scored with 2:06 remaining and goaltender
Pierce Charleson pulled for an extra attacker. The goal, assisted by
Jay Ahearn and
Ross Roloson, tied the game and sent it to overtime.
The Purple Eagles struck first when Spencer Young opened the scoring at 11:25 of the first period, assisted by Noah Hackett. Army (16-18-2) responded with Nik Hong's short-handed goal early in the second period, and Ben Ivey gave the Black Knights a 2-1 lead with just nine seconds left in the middle frame.
Ahearn, who finished with a goal and an assist for Niagara, tied the game 2:50 into the third period off a feed from Glebs Prohorenkovs. Easton Zueger put Army back in front midway through the period before Ott's late equalizer.
In overtime, Army capitalized when Lane Brockhoff was called for high-sticking at 2:24. Just 21 seconds into the power play, Woodring converted the game-winner off assists from Ivey and Mac Gadowsky.
Niagara's Charleson made 34 saves in the loss, while Army's JJ Cataldo stopped 31 shots.
