Niagara Completes Weekend Sweep of Saint Peter's

NIAGARA, UNIVERSITY, N.Y. — Niagara University baseball completed the weekend sweep of Saint Peter's on Saturday at John P. Bobo Field, defeating the Peacocks, 14-4 in eight innings.

How it Happened

Saint Peter's (7-19) struck first in the top of the second inning with a solo homer off the bat of Alex Rakas.

The Purple Eagles (8-15) took control of the game, putting up six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Elijah Hammill got things started with an RBI single to tie the game. Curtis McKay gave Niagara the lead with a sacrifice fly to plate Jason Green. Vincent Mauro recorded a three-RBI double followed by an RBI single from Tyler Vivacqua to wrap up the inning.

Tyler Smith homered for the Peacocks in the top of the fourth, but Niagara would continue to step on the pedal scoring twice in the fifth before putting up a five spot in the bottom of the sixth. 

Rees Kozar homered while Nate Milk singled to bring home the runs in the fifth. In the sixth, Saint Peter's walked in two runs before Carter Aarts singled to bring home two runners, while Vivacqua would score on a passed ball to make it a 13-4 game.

The Peacocks scored once in the top of the seventh inning, but Kozar would double in the bottom of the frame to enact the run rule.

Nate Bennett (1-5), got the start on the mound for the Purple Eagles, throwing 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on three while punching out two batters. Gage Wheaton came in for relief, fanning four batters in 1.2 innings of work before Luke Glenn came in to get the final out for Niagara. 

Niagara Notes

• Bennett recorded his first collegiate victory in the contest.

• The entire Purple Eagles lineup recorded base hits in the victory.

• Vinny Mauro has reached base safely in each of the last seven games.

Jacob Brooks extended his hitting streak to 13 straight games with three base knocks.

Curtis McKay recorded two walks to extend his on base streak to 10 straight contests.

Up Next

Niagara will host Quinnipiac for a three-game MAAC series April 4-6 at John P. Bobo Field. Friday's contest will begin at 3 p.m. with Saturday's first pitch being slated for 2 p.m. and Sunday beginning at noon.
