Niagara Drops Doubleheader to Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Niagara Purple Eagles (2-12) dropped both games of a Tuesday doubleheader against Youngstown State (7-24) at Covelli Sports Complex, falling 11-3 in the opener before losing a high-scoring 16-8 decision in the nightcap.

Game 1: Niagara 3, Youngstown State 11 (6 inn.)
Niagara jumped ahead 2-0 in the second inning when Gibbons doubled home two runs. Mayo added a solo home run in the third, but it wasn't enough to overcome Youngstown State's early offensive output.

The Penguins scored three runs in the first inning and added three more in the second for a 6-2 lead. Jackson (2-3) took the loss for Niagara, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) on 15 hits over 5.2 innings while striking out five.

Youngstown State's Ogin (3-4) earned the complete-game victory, scattering five hits and three runs while striking out five Purple Eagles.

Game 2: Niagara 8, Youngstown 16
Niagara's offense came alive early with a three-run first inning highlighted by Myshrall's three-run homer. The Purple Eagles added five more runs in the second, including a two-run home run by Cenname and a solo shot by Mayo for an 8-1 advantage.

However, Youngstown State rallied with four runs in the third, three in the fourth, five in the fifth, and three more in the sixth. Kennedy Dean homered and drove in six runs for the Penguins, while Kami Diaz added two home runs and four RBIs. Bella Meyer also homered and drove in three.

Tamayo (0-5) suffered the loss for Niagara in relief, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in 2.1 innings. Boggess (1-6) earned the win for Youngstown State with 4.2 innings of relief, yielding three runs on six hits.

Niagara's offense was led by Cenname (four hits, four RBIs across both games) and Mayo (three hits, two home runs). The Purple Eagles will look to snap their losing streak when they return to action this weekend.
