WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. — Niagara's struggles continued Sunday as they were overwhelmed by Marist 15-1 in a lopsided baseball matchup that dropped the Purple Eagles to 2-13 on the season.
How it Happened
Niagara's offense was nearly nonexistent, managing just a single hit against Marist's pitching staff.
Jacob Brooks provided the lone bright spot for the Purple Eagles, hitting a solo home run in the fifth inning that briefly interrupted Marist's scoring barrage.
The Purple Eagles' pitching staff had a difficult afternoon, with starter
Nate Bennett surrendering five runs in 3.1 innings of work. The bullpen fared no better, as Niagara used a total of five pitchers who collectively allowed 15 runs on 11 hits while issuing eight walks.
Niagara's defensive woes compounded their problems, with second baseman
Ian Huang committing a costly error that led to two unearned runs during Marist's five-run sixth inning.
After falling behind 4-0 in the second inning, Niagara never threatened to make it competitive as Marist continued to add to their lead with five runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
The Purple Eagles struck out 12 times and went 1-for-21 at the plate, managing to draw four walks but failing to capitalize on limited baserunners.
Niagara Notes
• The Red Foxes sweep of the Purple Eagles is the first time Niagara has been swept by a league opponent since March of 2023 against Rider.
